Global sportswear giant Nike has officially opened its first East Africa flagship store at Sarit Centre in Nairobi, marking a major milestone for the brand’s expansion into the African retail market.

The launch, held at the popular Westlands shopping mall, attracted athletes, sports enthusiasts, influencers and retail stakeholders, with marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge among the notable figures present during the opening ceremony.

The new outlet becomes Nike’s first physical retail store in East Africa and signals the company’s growing confidence in Kenya as both a sports powerhouse and an emerging consumer market.

Speaking during the launch, Nike Kenya Country General Manager Kieran Murphy said the company had spent nearly two years evaluating the market and scouting for the ideal location before settling on Sarit Centre.

Murphy noted that Kenya’s strong sporting culture, youthful population and expanding middle class made Nairobi a strategic entry point for the global brand.

“This is more than just opening a store. It is about becoming part of the culture, the community and the future of sport in East Africa,” he said during the launch event.

The store stocks a wide range of Nike products including running gear, football apparel, training wear, lifestyle collections and footwear. It also features Jordan-branded products, which have continued to gain popularity among younger fashion-conscious consumers globally.

For many Kenyan shoppers, the opening represents easier access to authentic Nike merchandise, which has often been difficult to find locally outside third-party retailers and online platforms.

The launch also reflects the increasing importance of Nairobi as a regional retail and lifestyle destination. Over the past decade, several international brands have entered the Kenyan market, using the country as a gateway into East and Central Africa.

Nike’s relationship with Kenya already runs deep through athletics. The brand sponsors several elite Kenyan runners and has long been associated with some of the country’s greatest sporting achievements on the global stage.

Eliud Kipchoge, widely regarded as one of the greatest marathon runners of all time, praised the launch as an important moment for local athletes and young people interested in sports.

Kipchoge said the presence of a global sports brand in Kenya could inspire the next generation while also creating opportunities for athletes and creatives within the wider sports ecosystem.

“This is a proud moment for Kenya. Sport is part of our identity and seeing global brands invest here shows the world the value of our people and talent,” he said.

The company has increasingly leaned into localized storytelling and community-focused marketing in different international markets, and industry watchers expect Kenya could become central to Nike’s East African identity going forward.
