Ruto Praises Mohamed Warsame After Supreme Court Swearing-In

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — President William Ruto has congratulated Justice Mohamed Warsame following his appointment and swearing-in as a judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya.

Justice Warsame was officially sworn in on Thursday during a ceremony held at State House, Nairobi, marking his formal entry into the country’s apex judicial institution.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Ruto described the appointment as a significant milestone in Kenya’s constitutional democracy and praised Justice Warsame’s judicial experience and integrity.

“I congratulate you, Justice Mohamed Warsame, on becoming the 14th distinguished Kenyan to earn the singular honour and privilege of serving as a judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya since the Court’s establishment nearly 15 years ago,” Ruto said.

The President said the Supreme Court has played a central role in safeguarding the Constitution, protecting the sovereignty of citizens, and preserving judicial independence since its creation under the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

“The Supreme Court, as our nation’s apex judicial institution, stands as the ultimate guardian of the Constitution and the impartial arbiter of Kenya’s most profound legal and constitutional questions,” he said.

President Ruto credited the court with delivering landmark judgments and advisory opinions during periods of political and constitutional uncertainty, saying its jurisprudence has helped strengthen democratic governance and uphold justice.

He urged Justice Warsame to preserve the court’s institutional legacy while contributing to the development of constitutional jurisprudence and public confidence in the judiciary.

“As you join your six colleagues on the bench, you now assume the solemn responsibility of preserving the Court’s distinguished institutional heritage,” the President stated.

Justice Warsame was appointed through a Gazette notice dated May 5 after his nomination by the Judicial Service Commission on April 29 to fill the vacancy left by the late Justice Mohammed Ibrahim.

The appointment was made under Article 166(1)(b) of the Constitution, which grants the President authority to appoint Supreme Court judges upon recommendation by the Judicial Service Commission.

Justice Warsame holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.

Before joining the Supreme Court, he served on the Court of Appeal from 2012 and previously worked in various divisions of the High Court, including the Commercial, Criminal, and Judicial Review divisions.

He has also been recognised for judicial reforms and case clearance efforts, particularly during his tenure as chairperson of the Community Service and Probation Committee, where more than 7,000 petty offenders were reportedly released from prisons nationwide.

Justice Warsame joins the Supreme Court at a time when the judiciary continues to face heightened scrutiny over constitutional interpretation, governance disputes, and electoral matters.

His appointment is expected to strengthen the court’s capacity in handling complex constitutional and public interest litigation central to Kenya’s democratic and legal framework.
