Kenya, China Deepen Security Cooperation in Talks Held in Jiangsu

NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya and China have agreed to strengthen cooperation in security and law enforcement, with a focus on police training, technology, counterterrorism and the fight against transnational organised crime.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen held bilateral talks with China’s Vice Minister for Public Security, Qi Yanjun, in Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province.

The meeting at the Bayview Conference Centre focused on enhancing security collaboration and leveraging technology to respond to emerging forms of crime.

Murkomen said Kenya assured the Chinese government of the safety of Chinese citizens living and working in the country, as well as Chinese contractors, personnel and assets involved in infrastructure projects.

He highlighted the government’s commitment to securing strategic projects, including the LAPSSET Corridor Project and the Horn of Africa Gateway Development Project in Lamu and the North Eastern region.

“Kenya and China enjoy a long-standing partnership in security and law enforcement,” Murkomen said, citing cooperation in police capacity building, counterterrorism and combating transnational organised crime.

Qi expressed confidence in Kenya’s security efforts and pledged continued cooperation and support to the National Police Service.

Murkomen was accompanied by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Kenya’s Chargé d’Affaires to China Lynette Mwende and other officials.
