NAIROBI, Kenya- A post-mortem examination has confirmed that youth mobiliser Cecil Ouma died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, as investigations into the fatal shooting linked to Youth Affairs Principal Secretary Jacobs Fikirini’s security detail continue.
Government pathologists who conducted the examination established that the fatal injury was caused by one bullet that penetrated Ouma’s chest, confirming the cause of death as a gunshot wound.
The findings come as detectives intensify investigations into the shooting, which occurred on Tuesday along Park Road shortly after a government youth empowerment forum held under the State Department for Youth Affairs’ KIKAO programme in Kariokor.
Police have already recorded statements from seven people, including two bodyguards attached to Principal Secretary Fikirini, a senior official from the State Department for Youth Affairs who was inside the vehicle at the time of the incident, and several witnesses.
Investigators are also relying on ballistic examinations, forensic evidence and witness accounts to reconstruct the events leading to the shooting.
Ouma’s family says he had mobilised youths to attend the government event and later approached the Principal Secretary’s vehicle after participants complained that the transport reimbursement provided was insufficient.
A confrontation allegedly followed before he was shot.
Principal Secretary Fikirini has since recorded a statement with police and pledged to cooperate fully with investigators, saying he is committed to ensuring Ouma’s family gets justice.
Police have not announced any arrests or identified the individual who fired the fatal shot as investigations continue.
