Ex-First Lady Margaret Kenyatta Meets County First Ladies Over State of Healthcare in Devolved Units

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta on May 8 presided over the Leadership Program for County Social Transformation: Peer-to-Peer Learning and Collaboration Showcase at the Kenya School of Government (KSG) in Kabete, where she commended county first ladies for their leadership, unity, and ongoing efforts to improve healthcare and community well-being across Kenya.

The event, which brought together several county first ladies, key stakeholders, and partners, highlighted innovative health and social initiatives aimed at addressing community challenges.

The showcase followed successful leadership training programs held in Mombasa and Nairobi in 2024.

In her remarks, Kenyatta praised the county first ladies for their dedication to transformative change and their collaborative spirit in advancing initiatives that directly impact women, children, and communities.

“Your passion and commitment are inspiring, and the work being done through the County First Ladies Association has made significant strides in improving health and social outcomes,” she stated.

Notable presentations included Dr. Agnes Ochilo (Migori County), who shared efforts in managing sickle cell anemia; Anita Mutula (Makueni County), who discussed cancer screening and community health promotion; and Betty Murungi (Siaya County), who highlighted Early Childhood Development initiatives.

Other county first ladies also presented impactful projects, including Edna Chelangat Lenku’s (Kajiado County) eco-friendly manyatta housing and Alamitu Jattani’s (Marsabit County) anti-FGM and teen pregnancy campaigns.

The event underscored the importance of collaboration between local leaders and partners like the Ford Foundation and Rockefeller Foundation.

Through strategic partnerships, including the Beyond Zero initiative, the county first ladies have laid the foundation for substantial progress in grassroots healthcare and social transformation.

Former First Lady Kenyatta also expressed her gratitude to the partners for their support, emphasizing that the collective efforts are driving the vision for a healthier, more equitable future for all Kenyans.

The Leadership Program for County Social Transformation remains a key part of the broader effort to empower local leaders to address the most pressing issues within their communities.
