Police Close In on Kassim Abdi Sebu Over Homa Bay Chaos

Date:

HOMA BAY, Kenya- The National Police Service (NPS) has ordered Kassim Abdi Sebu to surrender to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Homa Bay County over his alleged association with the violence witnessed during the Linda Mwananchi tour on Sunday, August 16, 2026.

In an update issued on Tuesday, August 18, NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said Sebu had been linked to the chaos that erupted in Homa Bay during the political rally.

“One Kassim Abdi Sebu, who is being associated with the mayhem witnessed in Homa Bay, has been ordered to report to the County DCI Headquarters, Homa Bay,” Nyaga said.

Sebu ordered to report to DCI

Police said Sebu is required to present himself at the Homa Bay County DCI headquarters to assist investigators as they probe the violence.

The order comes as police continue investigations into the disturbances that erupted during the Linda Mwananchi political tour, which left several people injured and resulted in arrests.

The NPS also ordered Oliver Jaoko, alias Olivetti, to surrender to the Regional DCI Headquarters in Kisumu in connection with the same investigations.

15 suspects already in police custody

According to the NPS, 15 suspects who were arrested while allegedly armed with various crude weapons were produced in court.

Police were granted four days to hold the suspects as investigations into the Homa Bay violence continue.

The latest police action comes amid heightened scrutiny of the events surrounding the Linda Mwananchi rally, with investigations focusing on individuals allegedly linked to the violence.

Sebu has been ordered to surrender to investigators, but the police allegations against him have not been tested or proved in court.

During the Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay on Sunday, August 16, 2026, violence erupted as groups of youths clashed, with roads blocked using stones and logs and tyres set ablaze in parts of the county.

Journalists covering the events were attacked, with some injured and media equipment vandalised or stolen.

Several vehicles were damaged or torched, including police vehicles deployed to maintain order.

The National Police Service said one police vehicle lost control during the incidents, resulting in the death of its driver and injuries to five other officers.

Police also reported that 37 suspected gang members had been arrested and were found with crude weapons including machetes, metal rods, knives, rungus and batons.

The violence left two people dead and scores injured, while police have continued pursuing other individuals suspected of organising, financing or facilitating the unrest.

A police officer was among those killed during the chaos.

Journalists attacked during the incident included AFP reporters Fred Ooko and Brian Ongoro allegedly dragged, beaten with clubs, and robbed of cameras, press cards and other belongings.

Other media crews, including journalists from Royal Media Services, KTN and K24, were also reportedly attacked, while media vehicles and equipment were damaged during the chaos.
