NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has warned taxpayers to expect intermittent delays on its iTax platform following a sharp increase in system traffic as millions rush to file their 2025 income tax returns ahead of the June 30 deadline.

In a public notice issued on Monday, the tax authority attributed the slowdown to a surge in users accessing the online filing system during the final hours before the annual filing window closes.

“The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has experienced a significant surge in traffic on the iTax system as millions of taxpayers race to file their annual tax returns ahead of the filing deadline. As a result, some users may experience intermittent delays,” KRA said.

The authority assured taxpayers that its technical teams are working continuously to keep the system operational and minimise disruptions as demand peaks.

“Our technical teams are working around the clock to maintain system stability and support. We appreciate your patience and understanding,” the notice stated.

KRA encouraged taxpayers who are yet to submit their returns to continue using its official digital channels despite the temporary delays.

“We encourage our taxpayers to visit itax.kra.go.ke or dial 2225# to file their tax returns,” the authority said.

The annual income tax return filing deadline typically triggers a last-minute rush as individual taxpayers, employees and businesses move to comply with tax obligations before penalties take effect.

Failure to file annual returns by the deadline can attract penalties under the Tax Procedures Act, even for taxpayers with no taxable income, who are still required to submit nil returns where applicable.

KRA has in recent years expanded its digital services to make tax compliance more accessible, allowing taxpayers to file returns online through the iTax portal or via the USSD platform.

The authority urged taxpayers experiencing delays to remain patient as efforts continue to stabilise the system during one of the busiest periods in Kenya’s tax calendar.
