Opposition leaders say police failed to intervene as suspected goons attacked the Linda Mwananchi convoy in Kisii, disrupting a political rally and injuring several people.

NAIROBI, Kenya- Leaders of the Linda Mwananchi movement have accused police of failing to stop an attack by suspected goons that disrupted their political tour in Kisii County, leaving several people injured.

The incident occurred on Friday as opposition leaders travelled to Keroka for the final stop of the Linda Mwananchi tour in the Gusii region.

According to the leaders, their convoy was ambushed at Keumbu by groups they described as hired goons who attempted to block them from accessing the rally venue.

Videos circulated on social media appeared to show violent confrontations, with opposition supporters alleging that police officers present at the scene did not intervene as the attackers assaulted members of the convoy. Those claims could not be independently verified.

Among those in the convoy were former Chief Justice David Maraga, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and other opposition leaders.

Addressing supporters after reaching Keroka, Sifuna condemned the attack, alleging it was intended to prevent the opposition from holding its rally.

“They have been telling us that we will not make it to Keroka, but I want to confirm we are in Keroka,” Sifuna said, adding that those behind the violence would be held accountable if the opposition formed the next government.

Maraga also condemned the incident, saying political leaders should be allowed to campaign freely without intimidation.

“If we continue like this, we may not hold the General Election in 2027. He is free to hold rallies wherever he wants, but he should also allow us to exercise our right to assemble,” the former Chief Justice said.

The violence forced the planned rally at Keumbu to be disrupted before opposition leaders later addressed supporters in Keroka under heavy security.

Several people sustained injuries during the confrontation.
