Makau Mutua Says Martha Karua Is a ‘Spent Force’, Questions Maraga’s Presidential Bid

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- Constitutional lawyer Prof. Makau Mutua has criticised PLP Party Leader Martha Karua and former Chief Justice David Maraga, saying neither offers a credible political alternative ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking in an interview at Citizen TV, Mutua argued that Karua failed to maximise the opportunity she received when she was selected as Raila Odinga’s running mate during the 2022 presidential election.

“Martha Karua had a shot to take, and she missed it. When we in Azimio gave her the opportunity to become the running mate, she was a miserable failure,” he said.

Mutua singled out the 2022 deputy presidential debate, claiming Karua underperformed against then Kenya Kwanza running mate Rigathi Gachagua.

“She very badly lost the debate with Gachagua. How can anyone lose that debate with Gachagua?” he posed.

He concluded that Karua’s political influence had waned, saying, “I think Martha is a spent force; her time came and went. It’s time for her to retire from politics.”

Mutua also criticised former Chief Justice David Maraga for seeking the presidency.

“Maraga has made a joke of the office of retired chief justices. He has made that office a joke. What is he doing running for the office of the president? Is he just idle?” he asked.

The outspoken lawyer added that, based on the current political landscape, he does not see a convincing alternative to the current leadership.

“When I look at all these individuals, I don’t see an alternative,” he said.
