NAIROBI, Kenya- The government has intensified preparations for the 2027 General Election after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced that the National Election Security Plan (NESP 2027) is complete and awaiting adoption.
Murkomen said the Ministry of Interior and National Administration is working closely with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to ensure peaceful, credible and verifiable elections.
Speaking after a high-level consultative meeting with IEBC officials, the CS said the ministry remains a critical player in the electoral process through voter registration support, issuance of identification documents, election logistics and maintenance of law and order during campaigns and voting.
“The Ministry and IEBC have a standing inter-agency coordinating mechanism that ensures effective voter registration and the delivery of peaceful, credible and verifiable elections,” Murkomen said.
He revealed that with support from the Interior Ministry, the electoral commission managed to register more than 2.3 million new voters during the recently concluded Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise.
Murkomen also praised security agencies and National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) for helping ensure peaceful by-elections held in recent months.
As part of preparations for the 2027 polls, the government plans to fast-track registration and issuance of national identity cards before the next mass voter registration exercise.
The CS further said authorities would strengthen conflict management and peace-building initiatives while intensifying the crackdown on criminal gangs to prevent election-related violence.
The meeting brought together senior security officials including Interior PS Raymond Omollo, Immigration and Citizen Services PS Belio Kipsang, Inspector General Douglas Kanja and DCI Director Mohamed Amin.
The IEBC delegation was led by Chairperson Erastus Ethekon alongside Vice Chairperson Fahima Araphat Abdallah, Acting CEO Moses Sunkuli, commissioners and senior staff.
