NAIROBI, Kenya- Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has condemned the killing of two people in Mbeere North, Embu County, after police opened fire on demonstrators protesting the poor state of healthcare services at Ishiara Level 4 Hospital.
In a statement, Muturi said he was speaking with “deep pain and anger” over the incident, describing the victims as residents who were taking part in peaceful demonstrations to demand better health services and dignity in public healthcare.
“What kind of nation are we becoming?” he posed, questioning the use of lethal force against unarmed civilians.
He said the situation at the hospital had become dire, forcing residents to protest over deteriorating conditions.
Muturi further raised concern over reports that some officers involved were in plain clothes, calling for clarity on command responsibility and accountability for the operation.
He questioned who authorised the response and why peaceful protesters were treated as enemies.
“This is not the Kenya we should be building. A nation where citizens are gunned down for demanding basic services is a nation drifting dangerously off course,” he said.
He called for an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the incident, insisting that those responsible must be held accountable without delay.
Muturi also expressed solidarity with the families of the deceased, saying he would pursue justice through all available avenues.
“We cannot normalize violence against unarmed citizens. Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done,” he said.
