MURANG’A, Kenya- Murang’a Woman Representative Betty Maina has congratulated Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro following his decision to join the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK) and take up the party leadership, saying Mount Kenya residents should be free to choose their political allegiance.
Maina, a member of President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), said Nyoro should be commended for having the courage to establish a new political path.
“I belong to UDA Party but Hon Ndindi Nyoro, congratulations for your courage and for your new party,” Maina said.
She argued that political diversity was an essential part of democracy and rejected attempts to dictate how the Mount Kenya region should vote.
“One of the key pillars of democracy is equality, that is, every citizen has the same rights and an equal voice,” she said.
Maina added that the people of Mount Kenya should not be treated as a bloc that can be directed into one political party.
“Mount Kenya and Kenyans are not sheep to be flocked in one political party paddock called DCP,” she said, in an apparent reference to the Democracy for the Citizens Party led by the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Maina’s remarks are notable because she remains a prominent UDA figure and has consistently defended President Ruto’s political standing in Mount Kenya.
She is among Mt Kenya leaders who have vowed to stick with the President as he seeks another second and final term.
Ndindi, in his Monday night address, did not indicate the position he will be going for.
The MP struggles with the perception that he’s a government mole meant to confuse the opposition and counter DCP’s growing popularity.
