NAIROBI, Kenya- The race to deputise President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election has gained new momentum, with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya emerging as potential contenders for the position currently held by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
The two veteran politicians from Western Kenya have intensified their political activities, with allies increasingly positioning them as possible choices to join Ruto’s re-election ticket as political formations begin shaping their strategies ahead of the polls.
Wetang’ula, a long-serving politician and former Bungoma Senator, currently serves as Speaker of the National Assembly, while Oparanya, a former Kakamega Governor and ODM deputy party leader, is serving in President Ruto’s Cabinet following the broad-based government arrangement between UDA and ODM.
The push by Western Kenya leaders comes as President Ruto’s camp continues to navigate questions over the composition of his 2027 presidential ticket.
Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has remained a central figure in the conversation, with UDA previously affirming that he remains the party’s choice for the 2027 running mate position.
Kindiki has also emerged as a leading preference among Ruto supporters in opinion polling. A TIFA Research survey released in 2026 placed him ahead of other possible contenders, with 59 per cent of respondents supporting his retention as Ruto’s running mate.
However, leaders from Western Kenya have argued that the region deserves consideration for the powerful position, citing its political influence and contribution to national elections.
The emerging contest highlights the delicate balancing act facing the Kenya Kwanza coalition as it seeks to maintain regional alliances while preparing for the 2027 presidential contest.
For Ruto, the running mate decision will be closely watched as it could influence coalition unity, regional support and the wider political realignment ahead of the election.
