NAIROBI, Kenya- Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, have died in a helicopter crash in Marondera, a family spokesperson has confirmed to ZBC News.
The couple were aboard a private helicopter that crashed in the Marondera rural area on Wednesday evening, September 30.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi told the broadcaster that the aircraft had six occupants.
Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed the deaths of the businessman and his wife, telling ZBC News that the family was at a loss for words following the tragedy.
The family’s confirmation follows an earlier government statement announcing that a helicopter carrying a prominent businessman had crashed, with no survivors.
Family confirms the couple’s deaths
According to ZBC News, Herbert Chivayo said the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
The confirmation identifies the businessman whom authorities had initially left unnamed while awaiting the formal release of the victims’ identities.
The names of the other four occupants were not included in the ZBC News report provided.
Police confirmed that six people were aboard the helicopter.
