Wiper Dismisses Claims Of Kalonzo Government Deal, Reaffirms Opposition Commitment

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Wiper Patriotic Front has dismissed reports suggesting that party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is considering joining President William Ruto’s government, saying the party remains committed to consultations within the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Wiper chairman Jamleck Kamau described the reports as propaganda and said attempts to link Musyoka to the government were aimed at creating divisions as opposition parties discuss possible political arrangements.

Kamau was speaking amid speculation triggered by a meeting between Musyoka and former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama, who is a Parliamentary Service Commission commissioner and has previously been associated with Ruto’s political camp.

Muthama confirmed the meeting, saying he had held consultations with Musyoka on national issues and describing him as his “brother and longtime political friend.” He did not announce any political agreement arising from the talks.

Wiper Explains Muthama Talks

Kamau said he initiated discussions with Muthama and maintained that the engagement should not be interpreted as negotiations for Musyoka to join the government.

“I am the one who initiated the talks with Johnstone Muthama. At no time has he met our party leader to persuade him to join the government. We have met twice, once at a hotel in Nairobi and again at my home,” Kamau said.

He added that Wiper was engaging other political leaders, including some currently associated with the government, as part of broader consultations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wiper’s official platforms continue to identify Musyoka as the party leader, while the party has also been conducting preparations for candidates seeking to contest the 2027 General Election on its ticket.

Kamba Leaders Push For Unity

Former ambassador Kiema Kilonzo said the immediate priority was to bring Kamba leaders together before reaching out to leaders from other communities and political formations.

Kilonzo said greater unity among Kamba leaders would form part of wider efforts to strengthen cooperation among opposition parties ahead of the election.

Kamau maintained that Wiper would remain part of the opposition and said the party was focused on building a political alliance ahead of the 2027 poll.

“We are in the united opposition to stay. We are focused on building a strong force to face President Ruto in the 2027 election,” he said.

Wiper has previously publicly backed efforts to build a united opposition front. In August, the party said Musyoka had been holding consultations with constituent political parties and others seeking to join a broader opposition coalition.
