SOG Recovers 2,000 Guns in Banditry Fight

Date:

SAMBURU, Kenya- Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has praised the work of the Special Operations Group (SOG), saying the elite security unit has played a critical role in the government’s efforts to combat banditry, terrorism and organised crime.

Murkomen said the unit had made significant progress in confronting violent extremism, disrupting criminal networks, addressing cross-border security threats and fighting drug trafficking.

Speaking during a visit to Kamanga in Samburu County, where he inspected SOG operations and training exercises, the CS said the unit’s work had contributed to improved security in areas previously affected by banditry.

“Thanks to SOG, working in a multiagency manner, communities in previously banditry-prone areas are now going about their lives without fear,” Murkomen said.

He said the specialised unit had recovered more than 2,000 firearms and 15,000 rounds of ammunition from bandits and terrorist groups as part of ongoing security operations.

The Interior CS said the government would continue investing in security infrastructure, equipment and officer welfare to strengthen the country’s response to emerging threats.

“We will continue modernising our security infrastructure, equipping our officers and improving their welfare as they offer their selfless service to the nation,” he said.

The visit was attended by senior security officials, including National Intelligence Service (NIS) Director General Noordin Ali and Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli.

The Special Operations Group operates as part of Kenya’s broader multi-agency security framework, working alongside various security agencies in counterterrorism, intelligence-led operations and efforts to restore stability in areas affected by insecurity.

Murkomen’s remarks come as security agencies continue operations in northern Kenya and other regions affected by banditry and cross-border criminal activities.
