Spain are world champions once again after defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in a tense FIFA World Cup 2026 final at New York New Jersey Stadium, securing only their second men’s World Cup crown and ending Argentina’s reign as champions.

Substitute Ferran Torres emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute after Nico Williams headed Pedro Porro’s cross into his path.

Torres made no mistake, firing past Emiliano Martínez to hand La Roja a historic victory.

The final remained goalless through 90 minutes despite Spain dominating possession and creating numerous chances. Argentina, led by 39-year-old Lionel Messi, produced a resilient defensive display but struggled to threaten Spain’s goal throughout the contest.

Argentina’s task became even more difficult after midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off late in normal time following a second yellow card, leaving the defending champions to play extra time with 10 men.

Spain capitalised on the numerical advantage, eventually breaking the deadlock through Torres.

The victory marks Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title, adding to their historic triumph in South Africa in 2010, while denying Argentina a fourth world crown.

It also crowns an outstanding campaign for coach Luis de la Fuente, whose side finished the tournament unbeaten after eliminating France in the semi-finals.

For Argentina, the defeat brought a disappointing end to Lionel Messi’s quest for back-to-back World Cup titles after lifting the trophy in Qatar four years earlier.

Spain’s disciplined defending and relentless attacking pressure ultimately proved decisive in one of the most tactical World Cup finals in recent history.
