Kuria Plots Gatundu South Comeback in 2032 Presidential Strategy

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has signalled a calculated return to elective politics, positioning Gatundu South as the launchpad for what he framed as a broader long-term political strategy.

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV, Kuria confirmed that his immediate focus is reclaiming the Gatundu South parliamentary seat, describing the move as the first step in a phased political comeback that ultimately feeds into a future presidential bid.

“I’m going to vie for Gatundu South MP seat where it all begun. Right now, I have joined UDA party because I will be running for presidency in 2032,” the former CS stated.

He characterised his defection to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) as “strategic,” arguing that it aligns his ambitions with the political timeline of President William Ruto, whose tenure he noted is constitutionally capped at two terms.

In Kuria’s framing, the transition period beyond Ruto’s presidency presents an opening he appears keen to position himself for early.

On the question of succession dynamics within the ruling coalition, Kuria offered a measured but telling assessment of Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, saying he retains a “mathematical chance” of staying on as running mate, even as he urged other contenders to “grab popcorn and watch” the unfolding political contest.

He was more dismissive of the prospects of Hassan Joho, terming his chances of clinching the deputy slot as “slim and none,” while simultaneously elevating Oburu Oginga as a potentially viable contender within the evolving political equation.

Kuria also issued a pointed warning to Mt Kenya political leaders, cautioning against what he described as “snake oil salesmanship” in regional politics.

He argued that President Ruto’s re-election path does not hinge on overwhelming dominance in any single region, signalling a shift toward a more nationally calibrated electoral strategy.

“If elections were held today, William Ruto would win, based on my numbers, without blinking an eye lid,” he noted.
