LUSAKA, Zambia- Zambian authorities have arrested and charged Lusaka Archbishop Alick Banda over a Toyota Hilux given to him by former President the late Edgar Lungu.
The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), which investigates drug trafficking as well as financial and money-laundering offences, said the vehicle was reasonably suspected to have been unlawfully obtained from the Zambia Revenue Authority.
Banda, who has served as Archbishop of Lusaka since 2018, denied the charge and was released on bail. His trial is scheduled for November 2026.
Archbishop Denies Charge
The DEC said the case centres on the Toyota Hilux allegedly received by Banda from Lungu.
The commission has not established through a court ruling that the vehicle was unlawfully obtained. The allegations will be tested during the court proceedings.
Banda’s arrest has drawn attention because of his public involvement in Zambia’s political affairs.
He had openly supported an opposition challenger during the August 13 election, which saw President Hakainde Hichilema secure a second term.
Catholics Gather In Lusaka
News of the archbishop’s arrest prompted Catholics to gather for prayers at a major cathedral in Lusaka.
The development also comes amid arrests of several opposition figures following the election, including opposition candidate Brian Mundubile.
