Explainer: How to Add Spouse to SHA Account

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Social Health Authority (SHA) has issued step-by-step guidelines on how members can add their spouses to the national health insurance scheme, in a move aimed at streamlining dependent registration and expanding coverage.

In a public advisory shared on its official platforms, the authority said spouses can only be added after they are registered as SHA members, after which the principal contributor must update dependents through the online portal.

According to the guidance, members are required to log into the Afya Yangu portal, select the dependants section, and upload supporting documentation, including either a marriage certificate or an affidavit.

“First, ensure that your spouse is registered as a SHA member. Log in using your ID and PIN, go to My Profile, select Dependents, and choose Add Spouse,” the notice states.

The process requires members to select the spouse’s identification type, input the National ID number and first name, and then attach supporting documents. An OTP verification code is then sent to the registered phone number before submission.

SHA said the digital workflow is designed to reduce in-person visits and speed up approvals, though members who encounter challenges can still seek assistance physically. The authority directed users to visit county SHA offices or Huduma Centres for support.

The guidance comes amid the continued rollout of the new social health insurance framework, which replaced the former NHIF system and expanded dependent coverage requirements.

Under the new model, contributors must actively register dependents, including spouses and children, to ensure they are eligible for benefits.

Health policy analysts say proper dependent registration is critical for access to outpatient, inpatient, and emergency services under SHA packages.

Failure to list a spouse may result in denial of services even where the principal member is fully compliant.

The authority also emphasized verification safeguards, noting that OTP authentication and document uploads are meant to curb fraudulent additions and ensure only eligible dependents are enrolled.

Members seeking further assistance are advised to contact the SHA toll-free line or visit the agency’s offices for guidance.

The authority said it will continue publishing procedural updates as part of public education on the new health insurance system.
