NAIROBI, Kenya — Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has welcomed the resumption of joint military training between Kenya and the United Kingdom, describing the renewed defence cooperation as beneficial to both Nanyuki residents and the wider country.
In a post on X on Tuesday, Ahmednasir said the continuation of military exercises at the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) would strengthen the local economy while preserving a longstanding partnership between the two nations.
Ahmednasir Praises Defence Partnership
Ahmednasir, who said he resides in Nanyuki, described the town as one of Kenya’s most cosmopolitan destinations and noted that the presence of British soldiers and their families has become an integral part of the local community.
“I live in Nanyuki, too. This is a beautiful cosmopolitan city and one of the best places to spend sometime with family and friends. It’s also the British Army HQ in Kenya. The soldiers and their families are a very important and integral part of the Nanyuki community,” he wrote.
He added that while historical grievances associated with the military presence should be addressed, they should not derail a partnership that has delivered economic and social benefits.
“Of course there are historic issues here and there that need redress. But we can improve on and address these outstanding issues so that we have a win-win situation. The agreement and the continuation of the relationship must be welcomed by all.”
Ahmednasir also commended Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi and his team for facilitating the continued cooperation.
Government Welcomes Resumption of Training
Ahmednasir’s remarks came after the Kenyan government announced the resumption of planned military training exercises at BATUK.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Mudavadi said the decision reflected the strength of the longstanding relationship between Kenya and the United Kingdom.
“This outcome reflects the strength of the longstanding partnership between Kenya and the United Kingdom, built over decades on mutual respect, constructive engagement, and a shared commitment to peace and security,” the statement said.
The government noted that the Kenya-UK defence partnership enhances the operational capabilities of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), contributes to regional peace and security, supports jobs and businesses, and generates economic benefits for communities hosting the training activities.
Commitment to Deeper Cooperation
The government said Kenya remains committed to strengthening defence cooperation with the United Kingdom through continued dialogue and mutual engagement.
According to Mudavadi, the partnership will continue advancing the shared objectives of peace, security and regional stability while delivering long-term benefits to both countries.
The announcement follows months of engagement between Nairobi and London over the future of joint military exercises conducted by BATUK in Kenya.
