NAIROBI, Kenya — The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has charged Nairobi businessman Walter Wekhanya Keya with three offences linked to an alleged Sh15.1 million fraud.
Keya was arraigned before Makadara Law Courts Senior Resident Magistrate Stephany Bett, where he pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to defraud, obtaining money by false pretence and possession of proceeds of crime.
Keya accused of defrauding businessman of Sh15.1 million
The prosecution told the court that between May and October 2023, at Drive Inn in Starehe Sub-County, Nairobi, Keya and others allegedly conspired to obtain Sh15.1 million from Constant Wanyonyi.
According to the prosecution, the accused falsely represented that they were capable of investing the money in a business venture.
The allegations form the basis of the first count, conspiracy to defraud.
In the second count, Keya is alleged to have obtained Sh5.1 million from Wanyonyi, together with others, through the same alleged false representation.
Third count involves alleged proceeds of crime
The third charge alleges that Keya knowingly possessed the Sh5.1 million, which he was aware constituted or formed part of proceeds of crime allegedly committed by him or other persons.
The prosecution is expected to present evidence to support the allegations as the case proceeds through the courts.
Keya denied all three charges when he appeared before the Makadara Law Courts.
Keya released on Sh10 million bond
The prosecution, led by Principal Prosecution Counsel Maureen Mwenesa, did not oppose Keya’s release on bond or bail.
The court subsequently granted him a Sh10 million bond with a surety of a similar amount.
Alternatively, Keya was granted cash bail of Sh5 million.
