FIFA Launches Investigation Into Racist Abuse Targeting IShowSpeed at 2026 World Cup

FIFA has opened an official investigation into incidents of alleged racist abuse directed at American streamer and content creator IShowSpeed during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following multiple confrontations with spectators while he was livestreaming from tournament venues.

The governing body confirmed on July 7 that it is investigating reports of discriminatory behavior by fans after the 21-year-old, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., was allegedly subjected to racist slurs and gestures during two separate knockout-stage matches.

FIFA clarified that the investigation concerns the conduct of spectators and not the streamer himself.

The first incident under review reportedly occurred on July 3 during Argentina’s Round of 32 clash against Cape Verde at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Watkins was livestreaming from the stands as part of his official tournament coverage when a woman wearing an Argentina jersey allegedly directed racist insults toward him.

According to videos circulating on social media, the woman repeatedly shouted remarks at the streamer. When Watkins asked what she was saying, she allegedly responded in Spanish by telling him to “go cry to the zoo” before hurling additional racial slurs.

Days later, another incident allegedly unfolded during a Round of 16 fixture involving Egypt. While broadcasting live from the stadium, Watkins appeared to be targeted by a spectator seated above him, who was captured on camera making monkey-like gestures while shouting insults in his direction.

The clips quickly spread across social media, prompting widespread condemnation from football fans, anti-racism advocates and fellow content creators. Many called on FIFA to identify those responsible and take disciplinary action.

In response, FIFA announced that it had launched an immediate investigation into the incidents. In a statement issued through FIFA Media, the organization reiterated its zero-tolerance approach to discrimination.

“FIFA strongly condemns racism, hate and discrimination in all forms. These actions have no place in football, at the FIFA World Cup, or anywhere in society.”

The governing body added:

“The FIFA World Cup is a celebration of unity, diversity and respect. Anyone who acts in a manner that undermines these values is not welcome in our game.”

Watkins has become one of the tournament’s most recognizable digital personalities through an official content partnership involving FIFA, Fox Sports and YouTube. The collaboration has seen him livestream from stadiums throughout the competition, giving millions of viewers behind-the-scenes access to matches, fan celebrations and player interactions.

His World Cup broadcasts have attracted enormous audiences and featured appearances from prominent football figures, including FIFA President Gianni Infantino and former Sweden international Zlatan Ibrahimović.

FIFA has maintained that it will continue working with tournament organizers and relevant authorities to ensure the World Cup remains an event built on inclusion, respect and equality for everyone involved.
