EMBU, Kenya – Three members of the same family have died after a devastating house fire swept through their home in Murara Village, Runyenjes, Embu County, in the early hours of Wednesday, July 8, 2026.

The victims were two sisters aged between 55 and 60 and their 20-year-old grandchild, who were asleep when the fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m.

According to relatives and residents, the blaze spread rapidly through the house, trapping the three occupants inside. Neighbours responded after hearing desperate screams for help, but the flames had already engulfed the house, making rescue efforts impossible.

Resident Mark Karangi recalled being awakened by cries of “Fire! Fire!” before rushing to the homestead.

He said neighbours found the house completely engulfed in flames, with the three family members trapped inside.

The fire razed the house before emergency responders arrived. The cause of the blaze has not yet been established, with police launching investigations into the incident.

Village elder Lawrence Mugambi said he immediately alerted the area chief after learning of the tragedy, prompting police officers to visit the scene and begin investigations before the victims’ bodies were removed.

Mugambi noted that he had never heard of any disputes or disagreements involving the affected family, describing them as peaceful residents who lived harmoniously.

The bodies were taken to the Embu Level 5 Hospital Mortuary for preservation and post-mortem examinations.

The tragedy has left Murara Village in mourning, with relatives, friends and neighbours gathering at the family’s home to console the bereaved and pay their last respects.

Police are continuing with investigations to establish the cause of the fatal fire.
