Gachagua Claims State Tried to Access His Speech Ahead of Address

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that the Kenya Kwanza administration and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) attempted to obtain the contents of his speech ahead of his address on Tuesday, but failed.

Speaking at the Democratic Congress Party (DCP) headquarters on August 11, Gachagua said government handlers and intelligence officials had sought to establish what he planned to say in his assessment of the Kenya Kwanza administration after four years in office.

“There have been attempts by government handlers and the National Intelligence Service to find out the contents of my address before I do it, but they have been unsuccessful,” Gachagua said.

The former Deputy President said he personally prepared the statement, while his wife, Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, typed the speech for him.

“I did the statement myself, and Mama boys (Pastor Dorcas Rigathi) typed it for me,” he said.

Gachagua suggested that keeping the preparation of the speech within his immediate family had helped prevent the contents from reaching government officials before his address.

“So, unless you get to Mama boys (Pastor Dorcas Rigathi), you can’t get to me,” he said.

His remarks came as he prepared to publicly give his assessment of the Kenya Kwanza administration and its record since President William Ruto assumed office in 2022.

The claim comes against the backdrop of increasingly open political differences between Gachagua and the Ruto administration following his removal from the deputy presidency in October 2024.

Gachagua has since emerged as a prominent critic of the government and has been mobilising opposition to President Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
