Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu has triggered a major online backlash after openly admitting that she deliberately sent a crowd of people to a Nairobi restaurant, allowed them to eat, and then left without paying a bill that reportedly exceeded Sh 30,000.
The controversy erupted after businessman Kamau wa Kisumu publicly accused the senator of causing huge losses at his newly launched café located near Mama Lucy Hospital.
According to Kamau, Karen Nyamu visited the restaurant accompanied by a large group of people who ordered several meals, including fries, sodas, and other food items, creating what initially appeared to be a major boost for his new business.
Kamau said he felt honored by the visit, believing that serving a prominent public figure would bring visibility to the café and help attract more customers.
He explained that after the group finished eating, Nyamu allegedly asked him for his M-Pesa number and assured him she would send the full payment later.
However, hours passed without payment, and according to Kamau, repeated attempts to contact the senator went unanswered.
The restaurant owner then went public with his complaint, accusing the senator of taking advantage of a small business that had just opened its doors.
But instead of denying the allegations, Karen Nyamu stunned social media users by confirming that she intentionally orchestrated the entire incident as revenge.
In a video shared online, the senator admitted that she deliberately skipped the payment and said she wanted to teach Kamau a lesson over past disagreements.
Nyamu explained that her actions stemmed from an old grudge involving the businessman’s previous public criticism directed at both her and William Ruto.
According to the senator, Kamau had previously visited media houses where he allegedly spoke negatively about both leaders, creating tension between them.
She claimed that when Kamau recently approached her and attempted to discuss their past issues, she decided to seize the opportunity to settle scores.
Nyamu said she informed him that she had a hungry crowd with her and promised that if he served everyone, she would settle all outstanding issues, including payment.
Instead, once the entire group had finished eating and reportedly consumed nearly all available stock, she left the restaurant without paying.
In the same video, the senator appeared unapologetic and even joked that she might send another group of people to finish whatever food stock remained at the establishment.
Her remarks quickly ignited widespread criticism across social media platforms including TikTok, Facebook, and X, where many Kenyans condemned the move and questioned the ethics of a public official openly celebrating actions that left a small business owner counting losses.
The backlash intensified after details emerged that Kamau had reportedly sold one of his cows in order to raise capital and open the café, making the incident even more emotional for many online observers.
