NAIROBI, Kenya — The National Police Service (NPS) has condemned incidents of political violence reported in Kisumu City and Nyahururu Town, confirming that one person was killed, several others injured, and 14 suspects arrested following separate disturbances on Sunday.

In a statement issued on July 12, the police described the incidents as acts of political intolerance and goonism that threatened public order and undermined citizens’ constitutional rights.

One Dead, Eight Arrested in Kisumu

According to the NPS, preliminary investigations indicate that a violent confrontation between two opposing groups in Kisumu City resulted in the death of one person.

The clashes also left several people injured, while nine motorcycles were set ablaze and a police vehicle was damaged during the unrest.

Police said officers responded to the scene and arrested eight suspects, who remain in custody pending arraignment in court.

The service added that investigations are continuing as officers pursue other individuals believed to have participated in the violence.

Six Arrested After Nyahururu Rally Disruption

In a separate incident in Nyahururu Town, police said a group of individuals allegedly attempted to disrupt a political rally by throwing stones at attendees.

The incident caused minor injuries to several members of the public, including Joseph Gitau, who sustained a chest injury and was treated before being discharged from hospital.

The National Police Service also dismissed reports alleging that a shooting occurred during the incident, stating that no shooting was reported.

Police arrested six suspects, who are also being held in custody awaiting arraignment.

NPS Warns Against Political Violence

The National Police Service warned that individuals found engaging in violence, sponsoring criminal gangs, inciting supporters or disrupting lawful political gatherings would face legal action regardless of their political affiliation or social status.

The service urged members of the public with information that could assist investigators to report to the nearest police station or use its anonymous reporting channels.

Police said investigations into both incidents are ongoing and pledged to conduct thorough, impartial and evidence-led investigations to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
