KISUMU, Kenya- One person was injured on Sunday after a group of armed goons attempted to force their way into St. Stephen’s ACK Cathedral in Kisumu, where Siaya Governor James Orengo, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other opposition leaders were attending a church service.
The incident briefly disrupted activities at the church as police officers deployed to the scene moved in to repel the group and restore order.
Videos shared online showed security officers confronting the group outside the church compound while worshippers remained inside.
According to initial reports, one person sustained injuries during the confrontation.
Police cordoned off the area and reinforced security around the church as the service continued under heavy protection.
The church service was attended by Orengo, Sifuna and other leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has intensified political engagements across the country ahead of the 2027 General Election.
“It is deeply shameful that goons were sent to attack us inside a house of God. But let it be known: we will not be intimidated,” Orengo said.
The incident comes amid growing concern over attacks on places of worship hosting political leaders and civic events.
In recent weeks, church leaders have condemned a series of disruptions at churches, including an attack on a public forum at Nairobi’s All Saints’ Cathedral that prompted calls for stronger action against politically motivated violence.
