Lupita Nyong’o Fires Back at Elon Musk Criticism Over The Odyssey

Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has broken her silence following criticism from billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk regarding her casting in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey.

Nyong’o, who was cast as Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra in Nolan’s highly anticipated adaptation of the ancient epic, addressed the controversy in an interview with Elle magazine.

“The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not,” Nyong’o said, dismissing the growing debate that has spread across social media platforms in recent weeks.

The online controversy began after Nolan confirmed the casting choices for the film, triggering discussions about representation, historical interpretation and literary adaptation.

Musk emerged as one of the most prominent critics of the decision, arguing that the casting choice reflected what he described as Hollywood’s increasing focus on diversity initiatives.

The criticism expanded beyond debates about adaptation and representation and eventually moved toward discussions surrounding Helen’s legendary beauty.

Some conservative commentators questioned whether Nyong’o fit literary descriptions of the character, often referred to in mythology as “the most beautiful woman in the world.”

Nyong’o, however, rejected the idea that beauty alone should define the role.

“You can’t perform beauty,” she explained.

“I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks?” she added.

The actress also pointed out that The Odyssey itself is rooted in mythology rather than strict historical documentation, suggesting that adaptations naturally leave room for creative interpretation.

“Our cast is representative of the world,” she said.

Nyong’o said she felt deeply honored to participate in the production and focused primarily on the material placed before her rather than online debates surrounding it.

Instead of responding directly to criticism, she said her attention remained on building a performance around the script and understanding the complexity of the character.

The controversy has also sparked a wave of support from figures across Hollywood, many of whom defended Nyong’o and criticized the attacks directed at her.

Actor Alec Baldwin publicly backed the actress by posting a photograph of Nyong’o alongside a message praising her appearance.

“Dear Elon … but she IS the most beautiful woman in the world,” Baldwin wrote.

Television host and actress Whoopi Goldberg also addressed the issue during an episode of The View, criticizing the personal nature of some of the remarks.

“I would suggest looking in a mirror if you have any concerns about people’s looks,” Goldberg said before adding that viewers always have the option not to watch a film if they disagree with casting decisions.

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel also mocked the controversy during his monologue, accusing online communities of creating outrage around issues that had little impact on the actual quality of a film.

Meanwhile, filmmaker Christopher Nolan has remained firm in his support for Nyong’o and defended his casting decision.

Nolan praised the actress for her “strength and poise,” emphasizing that he had strongly wanted her involvement in the project.
