NAIROBI, Kenya — Media personality Lynn Ngugi has weighed in on the outcome of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, saying the results demonstrate that the will of the people ultimately prevails over political influence.

In a statement shared on X following the declaration of the election results, Ngugi argued that the outcome carries important political lessons ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“The biggest lesson Ruto should pick from the Ol Kalou by-election is that the will of the people will always prevail.”

Criticism of Government Leadership

Ngugi said the government began losing public support when it became disconnected from ordinary Kenyans and failed to listen to citizens’ concerns.

She criticized what she described as excessive reliance on political appointments and advisers while accusing the administration of ignoring public demands for accountability.

“You started losing the moment you thought you were bigger than the people. The moment you believed no one could question how you’re spending our taxes.”

She added that political appointments and strategy alone could not divide citizens who, in her view, are united by frustration over the country’s direction.

Alleges Intimidation Failed

Ngugi further claimed that attempts to influence voters through bribery, intimidation and violence were unsuccessful.

“The bribes didn’t work. The intimidation didn’t work. The goons didn’t work. Nothing worked.”

She also referenced images and reports of residents escorting ballot boxes during the tallying process, interpreting the actions as a sign of heightened public vigilance.

“The moment you see Kenyans escorting ballot boxes to the tallying centre, they are simply telling you, ‘Come on, we’re not fools.'”

Ngugi did not provide evidence to support the allegations contained in her statement.

By-Election Sparks National Political Debate

Her remarks come after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Sammy Douglas Kamau Waweru of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) the winner of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.

The poll has prompted reactions from political leaders, analysts and public figures, many of whom have interpreted the outcome through differing political perspectives as attention shifts toward the 2027 General Election.
