NAIROBI, Kenya — Detectives have ruled out third-party involvement in the death of 21-year-old Margaret Wambui, who died after falling from the rooftop of a residential apartment building in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area, as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
According to investigators, CCTV footage reviewed from Altura Apartments, a 34-storey residential building, showed Wambui arriving at the premises shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 18, before making her way to the rooftop.
Police said the footage captured the 21-year-old spending more than 40 minutes on the rooftop, where she was seen taking photographs before moving close to the edge moments before the fatal fall.
Detectives said their review of the surveillance footage found no indication that another person was involved in the incident.
Investigators also established that a security guard assigned to patrol the rooftop had briefly left the area to use the washroom at the time of the incident.
A post-mortem examination conducted at the Nairobi Funeral Home concluded that Wambui died from multiple severe fractures sustained during the fall.
According to findings shared with the family, the injuries caused her death immediately upon impact.
Members of Wambui’s family attended the post-mortem examination alongside an independent pathologist appointed by the family to observe the procedure.
Despite the preliminary findings, relatives have urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to complete its investigations and provide a comprehensive account of the circumstances leading to her death.
Family spokesperson Maina Gathogo said the relatives are seeking access to the CCTV footage documenting Wambui’s final moments to better understand what transpired.
“There is CCTV footage showing what happened during the incident. We would like to review it as a family so that we can understand exactly what transpired and find closure,” Gathogo said.
The incident has left family members, friends and colleagues mourning the death of the young woman, who was pursuing a career in the hospitality industry.
Police said investigations remain ongoing and that further information will be released once inquiries into the incident are concluded.
