Miguna Miguna Slams Babu Owino Over DJ Evolve Case

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Lawyer and activist Miguna Miguna has launched a fierce attack on Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, calling for a lengthy prison sentence over the 2020 shooting incident involving DJ Evolve, reigniting public debate on justice, accountability, and political responsibility.

In a strongly worded statement on social media, Miguna demanded that Babu Owino be jailed for no less than 25 years without parole if found responsible for shooting or maiming any individual.

“If you shoot anyone and maim or kill them, as you did to DJ Evolve… the only appropriate and just punishment for you is a LONG JAIL TERM of no less than 25 years without parole,” Miguna stated.

He further argued that victims of crime, or their families, retain the right to pursue civil action for damages, insisting that criminal accountability cannot be substituted with political negotiations or private settlements.

“The State cannot and shouldn’t enter into negotiations with perpetrators and purport to settle criminal matters on behalf of the victims of crime,” he added.

Miguna Miguna also rejected appeals to forgiveness in criminal matters, insisting that justice must be grounded in accountability under the Constitution.

“Kenya is governed by the Constitution 2010; not the Bible or the Koran. No two ways around it,” he said.

His remarks came shortly after Babu Owino publicly revisited the shooting incident involving DJ Evolve, in which the MP acknowledged responsibility but argued for a restorative justice approach.

Speaking in a recent interview, Babu said he accepted responsibility for the incident but maintained that it was accidental and not the result of hostility.

“I took responsibility as a leader… I agree, I should be in jail… but there are different types of justice,” Babu said.

He defended his actions by describing the shooting as unintentional, stating that he had drawn his firearm during what he termed a moment of demonstration rather than conflict.

“Felix did not annoy me… I just removed it to show. There was nothing wrong that happened between Felix and me,” he added.

Babu also noted that he has continued to support DJ Evolve’s medical care, saying he has personally covered medical expenses over the years, including taking loans to sustain the support.
