MOJA Expressway Waives Toll Fees Amid Mombasa Road Flooding

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The MOJA Expressway Company has announced a temporary waiver of toll fees for motorists using alternative exits following severe flooding along Mombasa Road that has caused major traffic disruption in Nairobi.

In a public notice issued on Friday, the company said vehicles exiting via the Southern Bypass and Eastern Bypass Exit A will not be charged toll fees until normal traffic flow is restored along the affected sections.

The directive comes after significant waterlogging was reported along the A8 section of Mombasa Road, leading to heavy congestion for vehicles travelling from Mlolongo towards the city centre.

“Due to significant waterlogging along the A8 section, traffic congestion has occurred for vehicles traveling from Mlolongo toward the city center,” the notice stated.

The MOJA Expressway Company said the measure is part of its commitment to public service and social responsibility amid the ongoing transport crisis triggered by heavy overnight rains.

Motorists have been advised to use any inbound entry points from Mlolongo toward the city, but to qualify for the toll waiver, they must exit via the designated Southern Bypass or Eastern Bypass Exit A.

The company further urged drivers to follow traffic guidance and exercise caution as emergency teams continue to monitor road conditions.

The advisory comes as parts of Nairobi continue to experience severe flooding that has paralysed major transport corridors, including Mombasa Road, Jogoo Road, and sections of the Eastern Bypass.

The Nairobi Expressway Company corridor has emerged as a key alternative route for stranded motorists, with increased traffic flow observed as drivers seek to bypass flooded sections of the city’s road network.

Authorities have warned that persistent rainfall may continue to affect mobility across Nairobi, with drainage systems overwhelmed in several low-lying areas.

Transport disruptions have also been reported near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Syokimau, and Mlolongo, where vehicles have been stranded for hours due to rising water levels.

The toll waiver is expected to ease congestion temporarily as authorities work to restore normal traffic flow along the affected highway sections.

MOJA Expressway said it will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary, depending on weather conditions and road safety assessments.

The move marks one of the most direct private-sector responses to the ongoing flooding crisis, which has exposed vulnerabilities in Nairobi’s transport infrastructure during periods of intense rainfall.
