Spotify Expands AI Push as It Evolves Into Digital Media Ecosystem

Date:

STOCKHOLM, Sweden — Spotify has unveiled a major expansion of its platform, introducing new artificial intelligence features, creator monetisation tools, video content, advertising upgrades, fitness integrations, and audiobook enhancements as it pushes beyond music streaming into a broader digital media ecosystem.

The announcements were made on Thursday, May 21, during the company’s Investor Day 2026 presentation.

Spotify said the changes mark a strategic shift from being a music streaming platform to becoming an “all-in-one audio and content ecosystem” combining music, podcasts, video, advertising, and AI-driven experiences.

AI takes centre stage

A major focus of the update is artificial intelligence. Spotify is testing a new AI-powered tool capable of generating personalised podcasts, playlists, and daily audio briefings based on simple text prompts.

The company said the feature aims to make audio more interactive, personalised, and conversational, placing it in growing competition with AI tools such as Google’s NotebookLM.

Spotify also introduced expanded AI capabilities across its podcast ecosystem, including AI-powered Q&A tools, automated podcast briefings, and improved content discovery driven by recommendation systems.

Executives said the goal is to make audio content more “useful, personalised, and conversational” for users.

Audiobooks expand into new languages

Spotify also announced a major expansion of its audiobook and publishing tools under “Spotify for Authors,” which will now support 10 additional languages.

The new languages include French, Canadian French, German, Dutch, Latin American Spanish, Swedish, Finnish, Icelandic, Danish, and Norwegian.

The update allows authors and publishers to access analytics, publishing tools, and performance insights in their own languages, rather than relying solely on English-language systems.

Spotify also confirmed plans to launch invite-only audiobook creation tools in beta from June, powered by ElevenLabs’ voice technology. The tools will allow self-published authors to generate and distribute audiobooks directly on the platform in select markets.

For listeners, the company said it will introduce expanded Audiobooks+ subscription tiers, improved discovery tools, and AI-powered recommendations based on user prompts and listening habits.

Push into creator monetisation

Spotify is also introducing new subscription-based monetisation tools for podcast and audio creators, allowing them to offer paid memberships and exclusive content directly on the platform.

The move positions Spotify closer to Patreon-style revenue models, enabling creators to earn directly from audiences while keeping users within its ecosystem.

The company said the strategy is designed to improve long-term sustainability for creators and strengthen user engagement.

Licensing and AI content rights

In a major industry development, Spotify confirmed a licensing agreement with Universal Music Group that will allow regulated fan-made AI covers and remixes.

The company said the framework is designed to support innovation while protecting artists’ rights and ensuring proper compensation.

Expansion into video, fitness, and advertising

Spotify also announced plans to expand beyond audio. Its “New Music Friday” playlist will evolve into a video series, while new guided running features will integrate music with fitness experiences.

On the advertising side, Spotify unveiled a rebuilt ad platform designed to improve targeting, measurement, and value for brands and publishers.

It also introduced a “Verified by Spotify” badge system aimed at improving trust and authenticity across creator profiles.

Global rollout plans

Spotify said the new features will be rolled out in phases, starting with Premium users in the United States before expanding to other markets over time, including Kenya.

The company did not give a full global launch timeline, noting that rollout will depend on testing, licensing agreements, and regional readiness.
