NAIROBI, Kenya — A devastating helicopter crash in a Ololokwe, mountainous region of northern Kenya has claimed the lives of seven people, including a prominent U.S. media executive, a Miami businessman, and a top Ecuadorian intelligence official.

The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, when a tourist safari flight plummeted into the rugged foothills of Mount Ololokwe in Samburu County. Authorities have confirmed that all seven people on board (six passengers and one pilot) died instantly upon impact.

As recovery teams combed the wreckage, international governments and media conglomerates began identifying the victims, revealing a heartbreaking loss of global business, media, and political leaders.

Among the dead is José Alberto Suárez, the President and General Manager of several Telemundo stations under the NBCUniversal Local umbrella. Suárez oversaw major Spanish-language television stations across Florida, including Telemundo 31 in Orlando, Telemundo 49 in Tampa, and Telemundo Fort Myers. Colleagues remember him as a visionary leader who dedicated his career to empowering the Hispanic community.

The U.S. State Department confirmed that five of the six passengers held American citizenship, most of whom resided in South Florida. Alongside Suárez, the crash killed prominent Miami businessman and restaurateur Roger Edward Duarte. Duarte, a well-known figure in the Florida culinary scene, leaves behind a legacy of entrepreneurship.

The crash also claimed the lives of Adam Martin Hlavaty and Henry Parra, a married couple from South Florida who were vacationing in East Africa.

International casualties included high-ranking Ecuadorian official Michele Sensi-Contugi, the Director of Ecuador’s National Intelligence Center and a close political ally of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa. Sensi-Contugi died alongside his wife, Stephany Hollihan Vasconez, a successful fashion designer and founder of the luxury clothing line Sensi Studio.

The sole crew member, Josh Outram, an experienced Kenyan pilot operating the safari charter, also perished in the accident.

The aircraft, a Eurocopter EC130 B4, departed early Wednesday morning for a scenic tourism flight between two local wildlife conservancies. Aviation tracking data indicates the helicopter went down at approximately 9:13 a.m. local time.

Mount Ololokwe, renowned for its dramatic cliffs and remote terrain, sits roughly 170 miles north of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi. The remote nature of the crash site severely hampered immediate emergency responses. The Kenya Red Cross and local multi-agency security teams scaled the rocky foothills, facing further complications from a localized brush fire sparked by the impact.

By Wednesday evening, recovery teams successfully retrieved the remains of all seven victims from the hillside.

Kenya’s Air Accident Investigation Department (AAID), operating under the Ministry of Roads and Transport, has launched a full-scale investigation into the disaster.

The sudden loss has sent shockwaves through the global media landscape and the South Florida community. NBCUniversal Local leadership released an emotional statement late Wednesday, praising Suárez’s profound impact on the television industry and his unwavering mentorship of young journalists.

“José was a dynamic leader, a treasured colleague, and a fierce advocate for our audiences,” the company shared in an internal memo. “His passion for storytelling and community service leaves an indelible mark on Telemundo and everyone who had the privilege to work alongside him.”

In Ecuador, President Daniel Noboa expressed deep mourning over the passing of Sensi-Contugi, calling his death a massive loss for the nation’s security council.

Meanwhile, friends and patrons of Roger Duarte in Miami have begun organizing local memorials to honor the businessman’s contributions to the city’s vibrant culture.
