NAIROBI, Kenya — MP Tim Wanyonyi has extended humanitarian assistance to more than 200 families displaced by a devastating fire that destroyed homes in the Astrol area of Githogoro, Karura Ward, reaffirming his commitment to supporting residents affected by disasters.
The relief exercise targeted families whose houses and belongings were destroyed when the fire broke out at approximately 12 noon on Friday, June 26, 2026, leaving hundreds of residents homeless.
The distribution exercise was attended by Westlands Deputy County Commissioner Mayabi Buxton, Karura Ward MCA Fiu Nifiu, Kitisuru Ward MCA Alvin Olando Palapala, Karura Assistant Chief Barabas Masakhalia, local administrators and community leaders.
In a message delivered during the exercise, Wanyonyi conveyed his condolences to the affected families and pledged continued support as they recover from the tragedy.
The legislator also appealed to humanitarian organisations, corporate partners and well-wishers to continue assisting the displaced families as they work to rebuild their homes and livelihoods.
The relief programme was coordinated by the MP’s office under the leadership of his manager, Centrine Simuli. Each affected household received a package containing maize flour, rice, cooking oil, sugar, green grams, tea leaves, salt, soap and blankets to help address their immediate needs.
The supplies are expected to cushion families who lost virtually all their possessions in the blaze, which reduced more than 200 homes to ashes and displaced hundreds of residents.
The cause of the fire has not been officially disclosed, and authorities have yet to release the findings of any investigations into the incident. Fires in densely populated informal settlements often spread rapidly because of the close proximity of structures, limited access for emergency responders and the widespread use of flammable construction materials.
Disaster response in Kenya is guided by the Disaster Risk Management Act and other emergency response frameworks that require national and county agencies to coordinate humanitarian assistance, protect affected communities and support recovery efforts.
In addition, the Constitution of Kenya, 2010 places responsibility on the State to uphold the dignity and welfare of all citizens, particularly those affected by emergencies.
As affected families begin rebuilding their lives, leaders and humanitarian agencies are expected to continue mobilising food, shelter materials and other essential support to help restore normalcy in the Githogoro community.
