NAIROBI, Kenya- The COMESA Competition Commission has issued a strong warning to its member states regarding the ongoing recall of faulty handheld steam cleaners manufactured by the American company Bissel Homecare.
These Steam Shot-style steam cleaners have been recalled due to serious safety concerns, prompting a regional alert for consumers in Africa.
Bissel Homecare’s popular Steam Shot-style handheld steam cleaners, primarily sold in the U.S. and Canada, are now at the center of a major recall.
Over 3.2 million units have been pulled from the market after reports emerged of the devices dispensing hot water or steam during use, leading to burn injuries.
According to Bissel, there have been 183 reported incidents, including 157 cases of minor burns.
In light of this, Demissie Disasa, the registrar of the COMESA Competition Commission, has urged consumers across the region to avoid purchasing or using these steam cleaners.
“The affected products pose a significant burn hazard,” Disasa warned in a statement, highlighting the serious risks involved.
While these steam cleaners are mainly sold in North America, the ease of online shopping has made them accessible to consumers worldwide, including in COMESA member states such as Kenya, Zambia, Egypt, and Uganda.
The Commission’s preliminary findings indicate that these products are available on various online platforms that ship to Africa, raising concerns about their safety in the region.
For consumers who may have already purchased the steam cleaner, Bissel has set up a refund process.
Affected buyers are advised to visit the company’s website to fill out a form to receive a refund or digital credit.
The Commission emphasizes the importance of taking action immediately to avoid any potential harm.
