NAIROBI, Kenya- Five people, including politician Rose Mbithe Mulwa, her two children and two police constables, have pleaded not guilty to murdering lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu.
The accused appeared before Justice Diana Kavedza at the Kibera High Court.
The prosecution alleges that they jointly with others not before the court murdered Mbobu on September 9, 2025, at about 7:30 p.m. along Magadi Road in Karen, Nairobi.
The five are Mulwa, Chris Mulwa, Angela Mulwa, Police Constable Julius Kipkoech Cheruiyot and Police Constable Kennedy Kipkemoi Borboroi.
The court directed the prosecution to file an affidavit opposing their release on bond and scheduled the bond application for hearing on November 24, 2026.
The charge is a second murder case against Mulwa and her children, who are also facing charges over the killing of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
The family and other accused in that case have also pleaded not guilty.
Inspector Sang still under investigation
The prosecution told the court it intends to charge Police Inspector Kenneth Sang in connection with Mbobu’s murder.
Sang was arrested in Eldoret and appeared separately before the Milimani Law Courts, where a magistrate authorised his detention for 14 days to allow investigators to complete their inquiries.
He has not yet been charged in the Mbobu case.
Mbobu, an Advocate of the High Court, university lecturer and author, was shot while driving along Magadi Road in September 2025. He was also a former chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal.
The murder charge is an allegation, and the five accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
