Gladys Wanga Assures ODM Members of Unity After Raila’s Death, Party to Proceed with 20th Anniversary Celebrations

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- ODM National Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has assured members that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) remains intact and united even after the passing of its party leader, Raila Odinga.

Speaking during the World Food Day celebrations at Kendu Bay Showground, Wanga reaffirmed that the party will not disintegrate and called on members to stay focused on ODM’s vision and values.

“We remain one team, one movement, and one family. ODM will continue moving forward together,” she said.

Wanga confirmed that ODM will proceed with its 20th anniversary celebrations in Mombasa as earlier planned, emphasizing that the event will now serve both as a celebration of the party’s resilience and a tribute to Raila’s enduring legacy.

“The anniversary will go on as scheduled. It will be a moment to celebrate our journey and reflect on Raila’s lifelong commitment to democracy and justice,” she added.

The governor also urged ODM members to leverage the party’s unity as a foundation for political negotiations ahead of the 2027 General Election, saying that strength lies in collective purpose and not individual ambitions.

Governor Wanga acknowledged Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga’s appointment as ODM’s acting party leader, commending his leadership and experience in guiding the movement through this transition period.

“Senator Oburu’s leadership ensures continuity and stability within the party during this emotional time,” she said.

Wanga announced that ODM members in Homa Bay County will hold a memorial service at Raila Odinga Stadium next Wednesday to honour the late leader.

This follows a Central Management Committee (CMC) meeting chaired by ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, which resolved to hold memorial services across various regions as the party continues to mourn its founder.

According to Sifuna, memorial events are set for Magarini, Kilifi County on November 2–3, before proceeding to Homa Bay and Migori on November 5–6.

Sifuna reaffirmed that the 20th anniversary celebrations — slated for November 14–16 — will proceed as scheduled, featuring activities meant to strengthen unity and renew the party’s commitment to Raila’s vision of a just and democratic Kenya.

“Our focus remains on unity, continuity, and honouring Raila Odinga’s legacy,” Sifuna stated.
