NAIROBI, Kenya – In a reshuffle within the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), Brigadier Paul Njuguna has been appointed as the new spokesman.
Brig Njuguna takes over from Brigadier Ziporah Kalondu Kioko, a pioneering figure in the establishment of the KDF’s Strategic Communication department.
This change marks a return to familiar territory for Brig Njuguna, who previously served as the KDF spokesman from 2018 to 2020.
His tenure was noted for a proactive approach to communication, a quality he will bring back to the role after his stint at the National Defence University-Kenya (NDU-K) as the Director of Corporate Communications.
At NDU-K, his work focused on enhancing the university’s leadership in defence education, research, and national security strategy through transparent and collaborative communication.
Brig Kioko, the outgoing spokesperson, has been a transformative figure within the KDF.
She has been involved in the Strategic Communications department since 2008, overseeing key initiatives such as the Operation Okoa Maisha in Mt Elgon and the environmental soldier program.
Her tenure also included the notable moment of taking the first press team to Kismayu during Operation Linda Nchi in 2012.
Brig Kioko’s efforts in establishing the Strategic Communications Branch have been crucial in advancing the KDF’s public accountability and transparency, particularly through a weekly bulletin that keeps the public informed about the military’s activities.
The KDF’s decision to bring Brig Njuguna back as spokesman comes at a time when the organization is facing new challenges in adapting to the rapidly evolving communication landscape, especially with the rise of social media.
The shift reflects the Defence Council’s recognition of the need for a dynamic approach to communication that aligns with modern trends and public expectations.
The Defence Council, chaired by Prime Cabinet Secretary and acting Defence Minister Musalia Mudavadi, also announced several other key appointments.
Maj Gen Stephen James Mutuku was named Deputy Commandant of the National Defence College, while promotions and new appointments were made across the Army, Navy, and Airforce.
Among these, Col Edward Nyamao and Col Collins Otieno were promoted to Brigadier, taking on roles as Chief of Compensation and Welfare and Chief of Personnel, respectively.
In the Navy, Brig John Sankale Kiswaa was appointed Deputy Commander, while Brig Peter Shikukuu Chelimo became the Director of the Centre for Security and Strategic Studies at NDU-K.
These changes underscore the KDF’s ongoing commitment to professional development and strategic leadership within its ranks.
As the organization continues to evolve, the new appointments are expected to enhance its capacity to respond to both traditional and emerging security challenges.
