The Rise of Gen Z: Why Kenyan Politicians Should Be Worried

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- For the first time in Kenya’s history, Generation Z is stepping into the political arena with confidence and vigor, challenging the status quo and stirring up the political landscape.

Their active engagement, especially in the debate surrounding the controversial Financial Bill 2024, marks a significant shift in Kenyan politics, where young people are no longer mere spectators but active participants.

What does this mean for politicians who are used to hoodwinking the public? The answer is clear: Gen Z is a force to be reckoned with.

Gen Z, those born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s, are known for their tech-savviness and their acute awareness of social issues.

They are not just passive consumers of information; they are creators, influencers, and activists who leverage social media platforms like TikTok to voice their opinions and mobilize others.

Unlike previous generations, Gen Z does not shy away from engaging in politics. They demand transparency, accountability, and meaningful change.

The recent uproar over the Financial Bill 2024 is a prime example of Gen Z’s political involvement.

The bill, seen by many as detrimental to the economic well-being of young people, has sparked widespread debate and activism.

Gen Z has taken to TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram to dissect the bill, create informative content, and organize virtual protests. Hashtags like #RejectTheBill and #OccupyParliament have trended, showcasing the power of social media in amplifying their voices.

This newfound political engagement spells doom for politicians who rely on outdated tactics of deception and empty promises.

Gen Z’s digital literacy means they can quickly fact-check information, call out inconsistencies, and hold leaders accountable in real-time.

Politicians can no longer rely on the old playbook of hoodwinking the electorate with rhetoric and theatrics. Gen Z demands substance over style.

Moreover, Gen Z’s influence extends beyond social media. They are organizing on-ground movements, participating in town halls, and even considering running for office themselves.

Their activism is not confined to the virtual world; it spills over into real-world actions that drive significant political change. This dual approach of online and offline activism makes them a formidable force.

The rise of Gen Z in politics also brings a fresh perspective to governance.

They prioritize issues like climate change, mental health, and digital rights—topics that have often been overlooked by older generations. Their involvement ensures that these critical issues are addressed with the urgency they deserve.

Additionally, Gen Z’s diverse and inclusive outlook fosters a more representative political landscape.

They champion the rights of marginalized groups and push for policies that promote equality and justice. This inclusive approach resonates with a broader section of the population, further solidifying their influence.

For politicians in Kenya, the message is clear: adapt or face irrelevance.

Gen Z is not just a passing trend; they are the future of the country. Their engagement in politics, driven by social media activism and a genuine desire for change, is reshaping the political narrative.

Politicians must embrace transparency, engage with young voters authentically, and address the issues that matter to them. Failure to do so will result in a political landscape dominated by a generation that refuses to be hoodwinked.

Well, like Gabriel Oguda would say, we shall be here, no matter what!
