Health Ministry, Amref Deepen Partnership on Primary Care Delivery

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Ministry of Health has strengthened its partnership with Amref Health Africa to accelerate the delivery of primary health care services and improve the quality across the country’s health system.

Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni met an Amref delegation led by Kenya Country Director Meshack Ndirangu to review progress and align priority areas for collaboration.

The discussions focused on fast-tracking Primary Care Networks, scaling digitisation of community health systems, advancing community health entrepreneurship, strengthening chemical safety coordination, and addressing neglected tropical diseases.

Officials also explored ways to enhance health communication and expand digital learning for frontline health workers.

The meeting further reviewed implementation of the Kenya Quality Model for Health, assessing progress, identifying gaps, and outlining priority actions aimed at improving quality of care across all levels of service delivery.

PS Muthoni reaffirmed the government’s commitment to sustained collaboration with partners to build a resilient and people-centred health system.

She said stronger coordination with development partners remains critical to achieving universal access to essential health services.

The partnership comes as the government continues to roll out reforms targeting preventive and community-based health services, which form the foundation of the country’s primary health care approach.

Expansion of community health digitisation is expected to improve data collection, service tracking, and coordination between facilities and community health promoters.

Health officials said strengthening Primary Care Networks will help integrate services at community, dispensary, and referral levels, improving access and continuity of care.

The initiative also seeks to reduce pressure on higher-level hospitals by enhancing early detection and treatment at the grassroots.

The Ministry said continued collaboration with Amref and other partners will support ongoing reforms aimed at improving service quality, strengthening workforce capacity, and enhancing accountability in health service delivery.
