NAIROBI, Kenya- Kenyan security forces have killed 11 suspected Al-Shabaab militants and wounded several others in a pre-dawn intelligence-led operation near the Kenya-Somalia border, dealing another blow to the terrorist group’s activities along the frontier.
According to Counter Terrorism Policing Kenya, the operation targeted a makeshift Al-Shabaab camp after intelligence indicated the militants were planning attacks in the border region.
The assault was carried out by the Special Operations Group (SOG) with support from aerial surveillance assets.
Security agencies said 11 terrorists were killed, while seven others sustained critical injuries during the operation.
Officers also recovered three PKM machine guns, approximately 409 rounds of ammunition, and other military equipment believed to have been used by the militants.
The latest operation forms part of Kenya’s ongoing counter-terrorism campaign targeting Al-Shabaab cells operating along the porous Kenya-Somalia border.
The group has repeatedly launched attacks against security personnel and civilians in Mandera, Garissa, Wajir and Lamu counties.
Authorities said security operations in the region will continue to disrupt planned terrorist attacks and dismantle militant networks operating near the border.
