NAIROBI, Kenya – Outspoken Embakasi East Member of Parliament Paul Ongili Owino, also known as Babu Owino, has added his voice on the circumstances surrounding the mysterious death of social media influencer Albert Omondi Ojwang.
In a lengthy post shared on his official X account on Monday, June 9, 2025, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party pointed an accusing finger at the National Police Service (NPS) following the brutal death of the youthful social media user.
Babu Owino, who was recently admitted to the bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, said the Kenyan Constitution and our Criminal Justice System have a framework for dealing with any offence.
According to the youthful lawmaker, there is no offence in Kenya punishable by extrajudicial killing as witnessed in recent days from state security institutions.
“The police are the providers of security to Kenyans and should not be condoned as the biggest source of insecurity and danger to young people,” said Babu Owino.
Wha are the other issues that Babu Owino wants NPS to address
Among the issues that Babu Owino wants the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to address is to state the specific publication Ojwang’ made and what criminal offence it amounted to.
Babu Owino also questioned why the slain influencer, who doubles as a teacher, was transferred from Homa Bay home to Nairobi following his arrest.
“Homa Bay has police stations and courts with competent jurisdiction. Why was it necessary to transport Albert Ojwang more than 400 km away from his home after arrest?” posed Babu Owino while also questioning the nature of the injury Ojwang’ inflicted on himself that led to his death.”
“Are there fellow inmates who witnessed these self-inflicted injuries?” he posed.
Why an independent pathologist should conduct the post-mortem
Babu Owino further said there is a dire need for Kenyans to demand an impartial pathologist to witness an independent post-mortem procedure to reveal what manner of injuries caused the death of the young man.
“In the meantime, we want IPOA to move in quickly with a robust investigation on the DCI Officers and the OCPD and OCS of both Mawego (Homa Bay) and Nairobi Central Police Stations on the circumstances of arrest and death of Albert Ojwang,” added Babu Owino.
Kenyans, Babu Owino stated, are calling for a proper response from the IG of Police and the DCI on whether the National Police Service is the protector or killer of our fellow citizens.
“I ask Leaders to lead Kenyans in demanding justice for Albert Ojwang’, and I will be adding a strong voice in all ways possible to this quest for justice. I believe that a vast majority of Kenyan police officers are doing the right job, and we cannot allow a few rogues to misuse National Security instruments to terrorise innocent citizens,” the lawmaker further wrote.
