IG Kanja Links Influencer Albert Ojwang’s Arrest To Complaint By DIG Eliud Lagat

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has confirmed that the late influencer and teacher Albert Omondi Ojwang, who died while in police custody, was under investigation for allegedly defaming Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Eliud Lagat.

Speaking during a press briefing at Central Police Station on Monday, Kanja revealed that the DIG had filed a formal complaint against Ojwang over social media posts allegedly tarnishing his reputation. This complaint led to Ojwang’s arrest and questioning by the police.

“There was a complaint that had been logged by the DIG KPS (Eliud Lagat) that his name was being tarnished, and that is why Albert Ojwang was arrested,” Kanja said.

The IG insisted that Ojwang was treated appropriately while in custody and that DIG Lagat, like any other Kenyan, had the right to lodge a complaint.

Ojwang was arrested at his home in Homa Bay County on Friday by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

He was questioned the following day and officially booked at Central Police Station under OB number 136/7/6/2025 at 9:35 pm.

After initial questioning, Ojwang was transferred to a holding cell within the station.

During routine checks by officers, Ojwang was found unconscious in his cell and was rushed to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) confirmed that it has launched an investigation into Ojwang’s death.

IPOA chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan visited Central Police Station on Sunday night to oversee the preliminary assessment.

The authority has pledged a transparent inquiry and urged police officials not to interfere with the probe.

The developments come amid mounting political pressure. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua called for the immediate suspension of DIG Lagat, accusing him of personally managing Kamukunji and Central Police Stations without the knowledge of IG Kanja.

Gachagua alleges this led to Ojwang’s arrest in Homa Bay and transfer to Nairobi.

“Suspending DIG Eliud Lagat is pivotal for meaningful investigations into what exactly transpired,” Gachagua said.

Police earlier stated that Ojwang died after sustaining injuries from hitting his head against a wall while in custody, a version contested by Ojwang’s family and rights groups.

Ojwang’s death has intensified scrutiny on police conduct, custodial safety, and freedom of expression in Kenya, with calls for accountability growing louder from civil society and political leaders alike.
