MAVOKO, Kenya – Lawyer Angela Mulwa has been re-arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide detectives in connection with the murder of Dr Victoria Mutiso, shortly after securing her release on a Sh1 million cash bail.
Mulwa was re-arrested on Thursday evening and is expected to be arraigned on Friday as investigators pursue fresh leads in the killing of the doctor.
Her lawyer, Danstan Omari, and the DCI homicide team confirmed the re-arrest.
The development came hours after Mulwa and Nelson Masiga were released in a separate case involving the alleged theft of a Range Rover from a disputed 21-acre parcel of land in Mlolongo, Machakos County.
The property dispute has since become part of the investigation into Dr Mutiso’s killing.
Mulwa had secured release in Range Rover case
Mavoko Senior Resident Magistrate Lilian Kwamboka had earlier rejected a prosecution request to detain Mulwa and Masiga for an additional seven days to allow detectives to complete investigations.
The two suspects were arrested on August 2 after detectives recovered the Range Rover at one of Mulwa’s properties in Karen.
They had remained in police custody for 14 days.
Mulwa subsequently sought a review of her bond terms to enable her to secure release through cash bail. She argued that members of her immediate family were also in police custody in connection with the murder investigation and could therefore not assist her in processing the bond.
The prosecution opposed the application, citing the value of the disputed property, which it said was worth more than Sh900 million.
Magistrate Kwamboka eventually ordered each suspect to pay a Sh1 million bond with a surety of a similar amount.
They were also directed to surrender their passports and other travel documents to the court.
Mulwa was, however, taken back into custody shortly after her release as detectives moved to pursue the separate murder investigation.
Dr Victoria Mutiso was shot during morning commute
Dr Mutiso was killed on July 29 while travelling through Nairobi’s Upper Hill area during her morning commute.
According to preliminary accounts, the vehicle in which she was travelling was blocked by a black Toyota Prado near the junction of Mbagathi Link Road and Mawenzi Road.
Gunmen riding a motorcycle allegedly opened fire on the vehicle, seriously injuring the doctor.
She was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting have prompted a homicide investigation by the DCI.
