NAIROBI, Kenya — Comedian and activist Eric Omondi and seven co-accused have been released on bond after denying charges of obstructing traffic along Moi Avenue in Nairobi.
The eight appeared before the Milimani Law Courts on Tuesday, September 8, a day after they were arrested during a public event in Nairobi’s city centre.
Omondi was released on a personal bond, while each of the seven other accused persons was granted a Sh2,000 personal bond.
All eight pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Omondi denies traffic obstruction charge
The court heard that the accused allegedly obstructed the operation of motor vehicles on a public road, contrary to Section 58(c) of the Kenya Roads Act, Chapter 403 of the Laws of Kenya.
The charge relates to an incident along Moi Avenue following Omondi’s public event in the city centre.
With the accused having denied the allegations, the prosecution will be required to prove its case through evidence as the matter proceeds.
The accused remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
The case will next be mentioned on September 29.
Arrest followed Punguza Mzigo campaign launch
The campaign seeks to collect one million signatures in support of proposed constitutional amendments.
Omondi has argued that the changes would reduce the cost of running government and ease the financial burden on Kenyans.
Among his proposals is a reduction in the number of counties from the current 47 to eight.

The comedian’s proposed constitutional reforms extend beyond the number of counties.
Omondi has also called for the removal of several legislative positions, arguing that reducing the size and cost of government would free up public resources.
His campaign has presented the proposed changes as part of a wider effort to reduce government expenditure and lower the tax burden on ordinary Kenyans.
The signature-collection drive is now continuing alongside the court proceedings arising from Monday’s arrest.
