NAIROBI, Kenya – The National Police Service (NPS) has interdicted top officers at Nairobi’s Central Police Station following the death of blogger Albert Omondi Ojwang while in custody, in what is shaping up to be a high-profile case of alleged police misconduct.
In a statement, NPS announced the immediate suspension of the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the duty officer on the night of Ojwang’s death, the cell sentry, and all other officers who were on duty at the report office during the incident.
The move follows mounting public pressure and scrutiny over Ojwang’s death, which occurred under unclear circumstances while he was being held at the city centre police station.
The statement, signed by Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, said the decision was taken to ensure “a thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigation” by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
“All officers who were on duty or otherwise involved during the incident” will also face investigation, according to the statement.
PRESS STATEMENT : UPDATE FOLLOWING THE DEATH OF ALBERT OMONDI OJWANG
Ojwang, a little-known but increasingly vocal blogger on local governance issues, was reportedly arrested over the weekend.
His body was later found in city mortuary, triggering outrage from human rights groups and online activists who accused police of foul play.
While the cause of death has yet to be officially released, the National Police Service said it is committed to “upholding the rule of law, human rights, transparency and accountability.”
The case adds to a growing list of deaths in police custody in Kenya, raising long-standing concerns about abuse of power and lack of accountability within the ranks.
