NAIROBI, Kenya- Former Deputy President and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua will be out of the country for nearly two months, his lawyers have told the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), explaining that he will be unable to attend a scheduled summons next week.
In a letter dated August 20, 2026, Gachagua’s lawyers, Kiragu Wathuta & Company Advocates, informed NCIC that their client will be travelling outside Kenya from August 26 to October 20, 2026.
The lawyers said the foreign trip had been planned and publicised before NCIC issued its summons requiring Gachagua to appear before the commission on August 27 at 2pm.
They said the circumstances surrounding the pre-planned trip had made Gachagua unavailable on the date set by the commission.
The lawyers, however, said Gachagua remains willing to cooperate with NCIC and participate in any lawful investigation or proceedings.
They asked the commission to consider another date for his appearance after his return to the country.
The NCIC summons relates to investigations into alleged utterances attributed to Gachagua at various public events, including a rally in Luanda, Vihiga County, and events during his tour of Meru County.
In their response, the lawyers also asked NCIC to provide Gachagua with the evidence and other material relating to the allegations before he appears before the commission.
They requested original audio-visual recordings of the events, certified transcripts, precise dates, times and locations of the alleged remarks, as well as certified translations of statements made in languages other than English or Kiswahili.
The legal team further asked NCIC to provide the rules governing the proceedings, including whether Gachagua will be allowed to appear with his advocates, present evidence and call witnesses.
The lawyers maintained that Gachagua’s willingness to cooperate remains subject to being given adequate information and a fair opportunity to respond to the allegations.
Gachagua’s planned overseas trip comes as he steps up political engagements under his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ahead of the 2027 General Election.
