Government Launches Sh30 Million Raila Odinga Mausoleum Project in Siaya

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- The government has initiated the process of constructing a mausoleum to honour the legacy of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, with the National Museums of Kenya (NMK) inviting bids from contractors for the Sh30 million project.

In a tender notice issued on Tuesday, June 16, NMK called on qualified and reputable contractors to participate in the construction of the proposed Raila Odinga Mausoleum and the renovation of the nearby Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum in Bondo Sub-County, Siaya County.

The project marks the beginning of the government’s pledge to preserve Raila Odinga’s legacy through a permanent memorial expected to become a national heritage and educational site.

“The National Museums of Kenya (NMK) invites bids from eligible, reputable, and qualified contractors to participate in the tender for the Construction of Proposed Raila Odinga Mausoleum and Renovation of Jaramogi Mausoleum in Bondo Sub-County, Siaya County,” the tender notice states.

The proposed mausoleum will be located adjacent to the mausoleum of Raila’s father, Kenya’s first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, at Kang’o ka Jaramogi in Siaya County.

According to the design concept, the memorial will feature a research centre, library, digital archives, and an amphitheatre, facilities intended to document and showcase Raila Odinga’s political journey and contribution to Kenya’s democratic development.

At the centre of the design is a distinctive circular structure that will serve as the focal point of the memorial precinct. The layout incorporates a network of curved access roads and pedestrian pathways intended to guide visitors through the site while integrating landscaped green spaces and open public grounds.

The project is expected to highlight Raila Odinga’s role in Kenya’s political transformation, including his advocacy for multiparty democracy, constitutional reforms, and national reconciliation initiatives. It will also commemorate his contribution to the enactment of the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and his participation in various political settlements that shaped the country’s governance trajectory.

The renovation of the existing Jaramogi Mausoleum will complement the new facility, creating a broader heritage complex dedicated to the Odinga family’s role in Kenya’s political history.

Interested contractors have until June 25, 2026, to submit their bids. Tender documents are available at the National Museums of Kenya headquarters in Nairobi and through the institution’s official procurement channels.

The tender advertisement formally launches the procurement process, with construction expected to commence once a contractor is selected and awarded the project.

The mausoleum is envisioned not only as a burial monument but also as a centre for historical research, civic education, and cultural tourism, preserving the legacy of one of Kenya’s most influential political figures for future generations.
